REFLECTIONS

Artist Statement

Growing up as an immigrant in Israel was defined by a feeling of strangeness from my surroundings from a young age. The mixture of bright, vibrant colors that characterized my home seemed to be in great contrast to those of my friends’ houses. Years later I became more aware of the Israeli aesthetic: modest and severe in nature, due to the socialist roots on which the state was founded. I realized then that this difference in taste derived from the cultural background of my family.

This is my first body of work “Reflections” (2006-2008) it deals with these issues using my parents house as a stage, my mother and myself as actresses. These scenes are derived from my foreign aesthetic, the aesthetic of my specific home and upbringing, in contrast to the socialist background of Israeli culture where a sense of opulence of any kind is often frowned upon.
